One of the big quintessential questions that is directed at any new netbook is how big is the battery and how long does it last? We have seen battery life play a big part in many netbooks success, with the MSI Wind 6-cell being far more popular than the shorter runtime 3-cell version. So much so that the 6-cell models were extremely hard to get a hold of for some time, and were in short supply worldwide.
The Samsung NC10 has now begun to blitz the netbook market with its low power usage design, but at the end of the day there is only so much current-gen battery technology can do. Sure, smart software and optimized computing hardware such as the Intel Atom CPU can reduce drain on a laptop battery but the limitations of the basic battery model aren't changing anytime soon. Or are they?
Researchers at a South Korean university have developed a Lithium battery cell that lasts up to 8 times as long as current-gen batteries. How about a Samsung NC10 that does 64 hours of runtime? You could fly around the world a couple of times without the battery going dead! Now that's portability. However, as this tech is still in development don't expect to octuple your battery life in the next while, but its coming, so hold tight.
