We love the HP Mini 1000 at EV despite its flaws (3-cell battery, no straight VGA-out), and we were excited to see Laptop Mag tear one apart and find a 3G sim card slot under the battery. So obviously this machine was designed with 3G functionality, but why isn't it listed in the specs? It seems that HP decided to omit 3G from the initial load-out with the option of adding this functionality in later models. Who knows why...
After calling AT+T and HP, user dplxy from the Pocketables forum (thread here) has worked out that if you download a WWAN driver and slot your sim card into your machine (as above) you should have 3G up and running just like that!
However, he does have a brand new HP Mini 1000 and some of the 'older' (c'mon its only been out less than a month) machines might not support it. Still, this gives the Mini 1000 something over the NC10 that looked to be winning the battle of the big ass keyboards.
