HP shuns VIA CPUs, VIA takes to developing world

The big factor that contributed to the lackluster commercial success of the HP 2133 mininote was the sub-standard processing power. Even the machine's good looks, sturdy design and sizable keyboard couldn't overcome its lack of grunt - and reviews of the machine really hammered that home to consumers.

Well it looks like HP took note (no pun intended) and has scrapped VIA for every fanboy's favorite netbook CPU manufacturer, Intel. This will take effect with the Vivienne Tam edition mininote as well as the new HP Mini 1000 - both coming soon. HP will continue to flog their original HP 2133 mininote for low (yet good value) prices into 2009. The mininote is currently still available at our online store.

VIA in the meantime has established the 'Global Mobilitiy Bazaar' (GMB) - a platform focusing on second tier (read low-cost) netbook production for the developed world. This will punt the dated C7-M processor with Windows XP utilising low cost Asian manufacturers to deliver to third world countries. I imagine citizens of these countries won't be as critical as CNet editors when critiquing Photoshop boot times. Expect the first GMB programme netbook later this year. VIA's upcoming Nano processor will also feature later in the piece.
