Netbooks No Match For Dual Core Atom

JKK and UMPC Portal are both reporting that Intel's shiny new Dual Core Atom that everyone has gotten so excited about is not destined for your next netbook. The Dual Core Atoms simply draw too much power - 8.5w compared with 2w on your current Single Core Atom - thats over 3x the power drain coming from your CPU and will shave approximately a quarter off your battery life. Not only that, but Intel has refused to offer this powerful CPU to willing netbook manufacturers. It is instead destined for low cost desktop PCs, dubbed 'nettops', where power drain is not an issue and cooling is more effective.

Bummer for us! But hey, I'm sure Intel has something in the works - the Atom shortage of a month ago would have made some Intel executives sit up and take notice "Hey, this really is taking off!". Unfortunately, AMD executives are still in denial. Or maybe they are waiting to pounce?
